THE DIGEST
Caltech Professors Lead Back-to-Back Space Missions
Caltech is gearing up for an exciting period in space exploration with two back-to-back NASA missions led by its professors: Lunar Trailblazer and SPHEREx. These missions, launching just days apart, aim to expand our understanding of both the Moon and the universe at large. Lunar Trailblazer, a small satellite mission led by Bethany Ehlmann, a professor of planetary science at Caltech, is designed to map water on the Moon's surface with unprecedented precision. Meanwhile, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) is led by Jamie Bock, a professor of physics at Caltech. SPHEREx will look outward to the cosmos, studying the birth and evolution of the universe as well as the ingredients needed for life in our galaxy.
You can see SPHEREx launch from Vandenburg this Friday around 7 PM. Any even if you’re in Pasadena, look up! You can see it!
ArtNight Returns
Pasadena’s beloved cultural event, ArtNight, returns on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 6 to 10 PM, offering a free evening of art, music, and entertainment. Voted “Best Arts & Culture Event” by readers of Pasadena Weekly, ArtNight showcases the city's vibrant creative scene with museums, galleries, and cultural institutions opening their doors to the public. Attendees can enjoy a diverse array of exhibits, live performances, and interactive experiences across multiple venues. Free shuttle services will be available to transport visitors between locations, making it easy to explore everything the night has to offer. For more details and a list of participating venues, visit artnightpasadena.org.
Owen Brown’s Body: Movie Premier
John Muir High School alumnus Pablo Miralles will debut his short film, Owen Brown’s Body, on March 7 at 7 PM in the Rufus Mead Auditorium. The film, funded by the Owen Brown Gravesite Committee, educates Pasadena Unified students about Owen Brown, son of abolitionist John Brown. Owen participated in the 1859 Harpers Ferry raid and later escaped via the Underground Railroad. He eventually settled in Altadena, where he was buried on Brown Mountain. The event will also serve as a fundraiser for Muir alumni affected by the recent Eaton Fire. Attendees can purchase “DENA STRONG” t-shirts and John Muir Alumni car magnets to support the relief fund. Doors open at 6 p.m., and tickets are free. Donations are also accepted online. This screening highlights both local history and community resilience. Residents are encouraged to attend, learn, and support those in need.
