THE DIGEST

Key Decisions on Historic Central Library

You may have received your voter’s information guides in the mail this week. Next month, elections will take place and you’ll get to vote in the local government officials but also vote for propositions. One of those will be in support of the Central Library.

Now, we don’t talk about politics in News N’ Roses. Fun stuff only. But if you remember the Central Library, which seems like it last opened it’s doors a very long time ago, you probably miss it. And I do too.

The library has been closed due to seismic risks and holds cultural and historical significance, being part of Pasadena's Civic Center Plan since 1927. The city has since then secured $9 million in state grants and is pursuing additional funding sources. Pasadena voters will decide on Measure PL on November 5, 2024, which proposes additional funding for earthquake retrofitting, repairs, and upgrades to the historic Central Library. The measure seeks $195 million in bonds to strengthen the building, preserve its architectural features, modernize facilities, and reduce future repair costs.

The bottom line is, without this extra support, the library may remain closed for another ten years! And I know, it’s a lot of money that may come from the tax payers—if not from other grants—but better to have the money used on something like the Central Library, a historic place that fosters an atmosphere for creativity, education, and peace.
