THE DIGEST 🎄

Historic Gravesite Named L.A. County Landmark

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has unanimously designated the gravesite of Owen Brown, son of abolitionist John Brown and the last surviving participant of the Harpers Ferry raid, as a County Historic Landmark. This decision honors Brown's commitment to justice and equality and aims to preserve his legacy for future generations. Located atop a hill at the northern end of El Prieto Road in Altadena, the gravesite is marked by a rustic stone slab and additional stones outlining Brown's final resting place. The landmark designation culminates nearly a year of public hearings and administrative efforts by the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning.

Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who introduced the motion for designation, praised the community-driven efforts that led to this recognition. Local organizations, including Altadena Heritage and the Altadena Town Council, played pivotal roles in advocating for the site's preservation. Born in Hudson, Ohio, in 1824, Owen Brown was one of 20 children of John Brown. He participated in the 1859 Harpers Ferry raid, aiming to incite a slave rebellion. After escaping capture, Brown eventually settled in Pasadena in 1885 with his brother Jason. He died of pneumonia in 1889, and his funeral reportedly drew approximately 2,000 mourners. The landmark designation not only preserves a significant historical site but also serves as a testament to the enduring impact of those who fought against slavery in America.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT 🌟

All India Cafe

If you're in Pasadena and craving flavorful, authentic Indian cuisine, look no further than All India Cafe on Fair Oaks Avenue. This family-owned gem has been delighting the community with its rich flavors and warm hospitality for years. It’s no surprise that All India Cafe has been voted Best Indian Restaurant by San Gabriel Valley residents in Pasadena Weekly’s annual Best Of Awards for the past 15 years and counting—a testament to its exceptional quality and enduring popularity.

As my personal favorite Indian restaurant, it’s a spot I frequent for its consistently delicious offerings and inviting ambiance. Their chicken tikka masala is a standout dish—perfectly spiced, rich, and always satisfying. Pair it with their buttery naan or fragrant basmati rice for an unbeatable combination.

Their menu is packed with flavorful options, including crispy Paneer Pakora, a delightful appetizer, and the Masala Dosa, a savory South Indian crepe stuffed with spiced potatoes and served with chutneys and sambar. For a sweet and refreshing treat, the mango lassi is an excellent choice.

Whether you're dining in their cozy restaurant or grabbing takeout for a relaxed night at home, All India Cafe delivers every time. For fans of Indian food or newcomers looking to explore the cuisine, this Pasadena favorite is a must-visit!
