THE DIGEST
Rose Bowl Aquatics Center Honors Civil Rights Leader Dr. Edna Griffin ✊🏊♀️
A local hero stood up for civil rights and we are honoring her! The Rose Bowl Aquatic Center held a ceremony to rename the recreational pool in honor of Dr. Edna Griffin, a Pasadena civil rights pioneer known for her fight against segregation at Brookside Plunge.
Before the RBAC, there was the Brookside Plunge, a segregated pool that was open all week but black people could only use on Wednesday—the day they emptied and cleaned the pool. This policy outraged Pasadena’s Black community. Led by Dr. Edna Griffin and with support from the Pasadena NAACP, they filed a lawsuit against the city. In 1942, the court ruled to grant everyone, regardless of race, equal access to the pool. The Brookside Plunge was later demolished and rebuilt as the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center.
A key voice for justice, Dr. Griffin’s efforts shaped Pasadena’s civil rights landscape, advocating for equality and inspiring future generations. Her legacy was celebrated by family members, including her granddaughter, community leaders, and dignitaries, who emphasized her enduring impact on social justice and inclusivity in Pasadena.
Mayor Gordo Attends Wedbush Sign Unveiling 🏢
Pasadena Mayor Victor M. Gordo and Economic Director Dave Klug attended the unveiling of the Wedbush sign on South Lake Avenue, marking a significant milestone for the community. Wedbush is expected to bring approximately 250 new jobs to Pasadena, boosting the local economy and offering valuable employment opportunities. With a team of experienced financial advisors, Wedbush is committed to supporting the financial aspirations of clients and securing their futures through innovative investment strategies. This development reinforces Pasadena’s economic growth and community prosperity.
