THE DIGEST

Celebrating Indigenous Peoples' Day in Pasadena

Pasadena is located on the ancestral lands of the Gabrielino-Tongva and Kizh Nation peoples, who continue to call this region home. Recently, the 210 Interstate Highway, which runs through Pasadena and parallels Colorado Boulevard (Route 66), was renamed the Southern California Native American Highway.
Here are some ways you can experience Indigenous People Day in Pasadena:

  • Visit Hahamogna Watershed Park, named after Tongva villages meaning "Flowing Waters, Fruitful Valley,"

  • The Arroyo Seco is a 1,300-acre park features an athletic field, a 24-hole frisbee golf course, picnic areas, and trails ideal for birdwatching, biking, and hiking.

  • The Gabrielino Trail, named after the area's indigenous tribes, was the nation's first National Recreation Trail, offering accessible outdoor recreation. Starting at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, this 9.3-mile out-and-back hike leads into the Angeles National Forest.

  • Adam Clark Vroman, the founder of Vroman's Bookstore, was a photographer who captured the landscapes and native peoples of the American Southwest from 1895 to 1904, earning praise for portraying his subjects with humanity rather than romanticism. Explore his legacy at Southern California's largest bookstore, and don't forget to visit its wine bar, The 1894!

Caltech’s Athenaeum Turns 95

Caltech History is Pasadena. Yesterday, the Athenaeum, Caltech’s upscale restaurant, turned 95 years old. The term "Athenaeum" originates from Ancient Greece, signifying buildings dedicated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom, where scholars gathered to exchange ideas. In 1824, Sir Walter Scott and Thomas Moore founded the renowned Athenaeum of London, attracting literary and scientific luminaries. Inspired by this, George Ellery Hale envisioned a similar institution for Pasadena in 1921, fostering a collaborative spirit among Caltech, Mount Wilson Observatory, and the Huntington Library. With support from Mr. and Mrs. Allan C. Balch, The Athenaeum was established in 1929, featuring a beautiful building designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann. Its first formal dinner in 1931 welcomed notable figures like Albert Einstein, solidifying its role as a hub for the exchange of ideas in science, art, and literature, with portraits of influential members gracing its walls.
