THE DIGEST
Robinson Memorial
Twenty-seven years ago today Pasadena dedicated an iconic memorial across City Hall. The statue commemorates the extraordinary lives of brothers, and Pasadena natives, Jackie and Mack Robinson. Crafted by artist Ralph Helmick, the memorial features two bronze sculptures depicting their portraits in a dynamic bas-relief design that highlights key moments from their athletic careers and personal lives. Mack Robinson, an Olympic silver medalist in track and field, and Jackie Robinson, a trailblazer as the first black person to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball, are celebrated not only for their sports achievements but also for their broader societal contributions.
The sculptures also embody the brothers' significant efforts in civil rights, politics, and military service. Within the memorial, additional details—such as scenes from their lives and symbolic imagery—reflect their dedication to community uplift and social justice, especially in Pasadena, where they grew up. The Robinson Memorial serves as a powerful reminder of their legacy, inspiring visitors to remember the enduring impact of their resilience and commitment to social progress.
Red Flag Day Announced
A Red Flag Day is in effect in Pasadena Starting today, November 6th, at 4am. What exactly is a Red Flag Day? In 2009, the Pasadena City Council unanimously approved a Public Safety Committee recommendation to enforce parking restrictions within the urban-wildland interface (UWI) on days deemed high-risk for fires, known as Red Flag days. Red Flag Days are designated by the National Weather Service when any of the following conditions occur:
Relative humidity is at or below 15 percent, accompanied by either sustained winds of at least 25 mph or frequent gusts of 35 mph or more, lasting 6 hours or longer;
Relative humidity is at or below 10 percent for at least 10 hours;
Extensive or severe dry lightning activity.
To enhance fire department access and facilitate resident evacuations, parking is restricted on designated narrow or winding roads in Pasadena's urban-wildland interface areas. Make sure to arrange alternative parking options before a Red Flag day is announced. Vehicles parked on restricted streets will be ticketed and towed. Additional fire patrols are now active in the Foothill regions. For a complete list of streets with restricted parking, click here.
This is also a good time to review your evacuation plans and check that your emergency kits are fully stocked with essential items in case you need to leave quickly. For more resources on wildfire preparedness and prevention, visit ReadyforWildfire.org.
If you haven’t already done so, register for the Pasadena Local Emergency Alert System (PLEAS) to receive emergency alerts via voice, email, or text. PLEAS messages are only sent when immediate action, like evacuation, is necessary for safety.
