THE DIGEST

Europa Clipper Launch Delayed Due to Hurricane

NASA JPL: Europa Clipper launch has been due to Hurricane Milton's approach. The spacecraft, along with the Falcon Heavy rocket, has been secured at SpaceX’s hangar at Kennedy Space Center. The storm rapidly intensified to a Category 5, prompting safety precautions. A new launch date has not been announced, adding to the mission’s setbacks, including a previous delay in July for radiation shielding concerns. NASA remains cautious as hurricane season continues to pose challenges for the launch.

Billie Jean King Named Grand Marshal of 2025 Rose Parade

Tennis icon Billie Jean King will lead the 2025 Rose Parade as grand marshal, kicking off Pasadena's 136th New Year tradition. With 39 Grand Slam titles and a legacy of fighting for equality, King brings star power and history to the event. Announced to the tune of "Philadelphia Freedom," King called it a "dream come true," sharing fond memories of watching the parade growing up. The 2025 theme, "Best Day Ever!," celebrates life’s best moments—a fitting nod for the trailblazer who’s been breaking barriers since age 12.

Pasadena Urges Residents to Take Precautions as Coyote Sightings Increase

Pasadena Public Health is urging residents to take steps to avoid conflicts with coyotes, which are common in the area. As adolescent coyotes leave their packs in late summer and fall, sightings may increase in neighborhoods. To keep coyotes wary of humans, the city recommends "coyote hazing"—using loud noises, bright lights, or other deterrents to drive them away. Tips include making yourself look larger, maintaining eye contact, and never turning your back. Pet owners should keep dogs on short leashes and bring cats indoors. Residents are also reminded to remove attractants like pet food and unsecured trash, and to report coyote sightings to the city.
